Dieu-merci (James) Kankonde from Melbourne

Dieu-merci (James) Kankonde is a Melbourne-based songwriter, executive producer, and A&R consultant with a deep passion for music, artist development, and cultural storytelling. With a Bachelor of Arts in Entertainment Industry from QUT, he has built a dynamic career that bridges creative artistry with strategic execution in the music and entertainment sectors.

As one half of the once acclaimed duo Laurette N James, Dieu-merci has captivated audiences with his soulful, evocative music, performing at renowned festivals such as Woodford Folk Festival, Brisbane Festival, Laneway Festival, and the African Music and Cultural Festival. His work has gained recognition for its ability to blend diverse musical influences, shaped by his African heritage and Australian industry experience.

Beyond his work as a performer and songwriter, Dieu-merci has contributed to the business side of music, working in A&R scouting, artist relations, and project management. His role as an Artist Liaison & A&R Consultant at Merc!Music Group) saw him champion emerging artists, curating showcases and fostering connections within the industry. His past work as Assistant Associate Producer for the 2018 Commonwealth Games Art & Culture Program (Jack Morton Worldwide) further refined his expertise in large-scale event production and artist logistics. Dedicated to supporting independent artists, Dieu-merci is the founder of Merc!Music Artist Service and Copyright Management, a business aimed at helping musicians navigate pre-production, production, and music distribution. His industry experience extends to working with Sony Music, Jack Morton Worldwide, and Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV), where he has engaged in Artist liason ,A&R, brand licensing, and creative music strategy.

With a strong community focus, Dieu-merci has also worked as a youth worker and disability support worker, ensuring his impact goes beyond music and into real-world advocacy and empowerment.
